Like other forms of elder abuse, “elder self-neglect” is a growing problem in Georgia. Although this form of abuse does not involve any other person, elder self-neglect is one of the leading forms of abuse in nursing homes. Elder self-neglect can be defined as the failure to perform basic self-care needs or the refusal of care from others.
There are some visible signs of elder self-neglect. These signs include:
- Poor personal hygiene
- Mismanagement of medication
- Poor living conditions
- Indicators of malnutrition
- Demonstration of extreme emotional distress
Some of the leading causes of elder self-neglect include long-term self-neglect, depression, or feelings of isolation.
Elder self-neglect has the potential to be fatal if it is not caught in the early stages. Some studies show that elder self-neglect is one of the leading causes of death among elders.
If your loved is suffering from self-neglect, and you are not sure who you can talk to, then please feel free to call and speak to an experienced Atlanta elder abuse lawyer at Schenk Smith today.
