Nursing home abuse is a common problem in the U.S. Abuse can be physical, emotional, sexual, or financial. Signs of physical abuse include bedsores, bruises, and bleeding. Abuse can also affect the victim’s behavior and mood. If a nursing home resident seems especially emotionally withdrawn or experiences sudden behavioral changes, they may be suffering from abuse. Additionally, they may appear reluctant to talk in front of nursing home staff. If a resident is being financially exploited, they may have unpaid bills or unexpected financial problems that they can’t account for. If you notice any of these signs and think your loved one has been abused in a nursing home, you should report the abuse as soon as possible.

When reporting nursing home abuse, it helps to be as specific as possible. Give details like names, dates, and locations. State when exactly the abuse occurred, or if you’re not sure, when you noticed the signs of abuse. Provide details about where the abuse happened, or where you believe it happened. Give the name and address of the nursing home where the abuse occurred, and if possible, the names of everyone involved. List all the signs of abuse you’ve noticed, and if this has been going on for a while, be sure to include that information.
You may also want to report the abuse to the victim’s doctor or health care specialist, and you may want to find an ombudsman to advocate for the victim’s rights and support you as you move forward in resolving the conflict.
Nursing homes are legally obligated to protect their residents from every kind of abuse. If a nursing home fails to prevent abuse, they may be liable for the consequences, including medical bills, out-of-pocket expenses, and pain and suffering.
