Those who have served our country deserve the best of care, particularly those who are disabled and are in the later years of their lives. The Veteran’s Administration provides care for many of these people who reside in VA nursing homes across the country. When investigative articles in USA Today and the Boston Globe called into question the quality of care being offered in these homes, one congressman called for an investigation. Sunshine State News reports on the story.
The two investigative articles noted that many of the Veteran’s Administration nursing homes are receiving the lowest possible marks when it comes to caring for their residents.
U.S. Representative Vern Buchanan, a Republican representing Florida, began calling for a congressional investigation into the neglect and misconduct that was apparent at these facilities. Buchanan wrote to both the heads of the U.S. House and Senate Veteran’s Affairs committees to request an investigation.

Some of the reports are disturbing and detail one veteran found in a sheet that was covered in urine and feces. Another incident led to a veteran having to have his leg amputated after a foot injury went untreated so long that his toes turned black and attracted maggots. Another incident involved an aide who was supposed to check on the veteran hourly but did not check in on him at all. She instead played video games on her computer.
There are some 50,000 veterans in the care of VA nursing homes. 3 of the 60 lowest-rated VA nursing homes were in Florida. These 60 nursing homes only had one-star ratings.
