Nurses are only human. Mistakes can happen. But when nurses try to cover up their mistakes then that can lead to pain and suffering for residents in nursing homes. One of the ways modern facilities try to keep mistakes from happening is using electronic medical records. Yet even these can be falsified.
A nurse was arrested for falsifying records after he was caught saying patients received medication when they hadn’t. He allegedly left the center before his shift and had narcotics and mental health medications left in his medication cart. He told the oncoming nurse to discard the medication. He had already signed the EHR to say the drugs were administered to the patients and that he removed the powerful drugs from the medication cabinet.
The drugs included Oxycontin, Hydrocodone, Xanax, and Ativan, according to the investigators.

An elderly person reliant on pain medication or mental health medication cannot miss doses. The families of the five patients who didn’t receive medicine now have grounds to file a medical malpractice lawsuit against the nurse and the facility. At the very least, they would have grounds to investigate what other things might have been neglected in their loved one’s care.
