Our loved ones are expected to be kept safe from harm in nursing and assisted living facilities. One would hope that this safety would extend to their valuables, but that is not always the case. One nurse’s aide has just been sentenced to 65 years in jail for stealing several nursing home residents’ valuables.
Susan Gwynne showed little emotion as she sat next to her attorney and Delaware County Common Pleas Judge David Gormley handed down her sentence for a total of 46 counts.
For over 12 years, Gwynne made a living stealing valuables and keepsakes from at least 46 senior residents. She was sentenced to 65 years in prison.
The 55-year-old former nurse’s aide was caught when residents at the Inn at Olentangy Trail reported valuables missing earlier this year. Upon investigating surveillance video, Gwynne was spotted, dressed as an employee and entering resident’s rooms. She carried with her an empty bag that was seen bulging as she left. She was charged with a total of 31 counts of felony burglary and 15 counts of receiving stolen property.
Gormley made note of Gwynee’s lack of remorse. Her crimes had a considerable emotional impact on many of her victims, one of whom was more than 100 years old. None of the victims spoke at the hearing. Twelve have since passed away.
Some of the counts that she faced were ordered to be served concurrently. If she had to serve all counts consecutively, she would be facing 100 years in prison.
